Di Marineo, 33, also know as Pippa Bacca, was murdered in Turkey in 2008 while hitchhiking to the Israeli city of Tel Aviv from the Italian city of Milan in a white wedding gown in the hope of sending a "message of peace" to the world.

Continuing the journey on the anniversary of her death, documentary film maker Bingol Elmas departed from the town of Gebze in the northwestern province of Kocaeli, where Di Marineo was killed on March 31.

Elmas, wearing a black wedding gown and who is the same age as Di Marineo, will end her nearly 1,400-km long journey in the Turkish checkpoint of Cilvegozu at the border with Syria, papers reported.

As part of the project, sponsored by French-German co-owned TV channel Arte, Elmas will document her journey and will be followed secretly by a support team as she hitchhikes to Syria

The documentary "Letter to Pippa" is due for release in September.
